The challenges facing sculptors who hand carve limestone.

Hand carving limestone comes with its own set of challenges. Two of the challenges I work to overcome in creating my sculptures is mastering fine detail and not having a heart attack when a shell appears where I wanted to carve a nostril or eyeball line. I would be interested to hear how other sculptors overcome these challenges.

  1. I have found that the most important thing to remember when carving fine detail is to do it carefully and “less is best”
